When it comes to art, Amsterdam has it all. In recent years the city’s museums have undergone a huge amount of refurbishment and have been transformed into classy establishments that are widely renowned for their art history. After all, the city has been made famous by Rembrandt, Vermeer and Van Gogh, so it is only right that their work is celebrated.

Culture lovers will feel spoilt for choice when it comes to attractions in this city; there is a thriving contemporary art scene that is spearheaded by photographers, product designers and architects.

Getting to Amsterdam is really quite simple, so you should definitely make it your mission to organise a trip, even just for a weekend break. Here are three excellent art institutions that should not be missed when you visit.

Van Gogh Museum

You really can’t miss this classic museum when visiting this beautiful city. Besides the fact that the Rietveld building in the complex houses a remarkable exhibition showing 200 paintings by the acclaimed painter, there are also examples of his unique Japanese prints, plus relevant work by Toulouse-Lautrec that helps to bring Van Gogh’s work into perspective.

Top Tip: It is advisable to get here early as queues get very long, especially in the afternoons.

A much more modern museum, the artistic haven that is ‘Foam’ is a photography wonderland. Housing some wonderful exhibitions that feature works by influencers such as August Sander, this is a fabulous place to visit if you love to see what these talented ‘lens lovers’ can do. Here you can also enjoy exhibitions that cover current local and universal themes, be it crime shots or pictures of models on the world stage.

It is hard to believe that Rembrandt purchased this dwelling almost 400 years ago for nearly 6000 euros. This was a huge amount of money and the size of his mortgage led him soon to go bankrupt and forced him to move. When he left, an inventory was made of everything remaining in the house and it is with this information that modern day craftsmen have recreated the house, as it once would have been. Rembrandt was an avid collector and his artefacts, along with his stylish furniture, have been brought back to life.

While it might be a re-creation, it is very skilfully done and gives a good idea of what the free-spirited artist’s house was actually like. There is also an interesting collection of Rembrandt’s experimental etchings. You will find his paintings displayed in the Rijksmuseum.

Getting to Amsterdam

In less than an hour you can fly from London to Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. Flights are direct and relatively frequent so you have plenty of choice when it comes to carriers and dates.

The best way to get from the airport to your hotel is with a private shuttle transfer. Avoiding public transport and its potential problems is paramount when you are away for weekend break and time is precious. There are some excellent services on offer that can be pre-booked. In less than 30 minutes you can travel from the airport and be in your hotel taking a refreshing break before hitting the sights.

Museums in this great city are plentiful but the three I have introduced above are a great place to start.
