When people meet acquaintances or friends, both Chinese and English people usually greet each other. Appropriate greetings may help establish and improve interpersonal relationships. The purpose of greeting is to establish or maintain social contact，not to transfer information. So they are quite brief and conventional.
Sometimes people will greet each other by using gestures, such as bowing, handshaking, cheek kissing, hand kissing, hug and so on. In Chinese cultures, the depth of the bow expresses degree of respect or gratitude. To show the highest degree of respect or politeness，one bends one’s head and waist about 45 degrees. Common courtesy is bending one’s head and waist about 15 degrees. In a very casual meeting with a person about your age, nodding your head would be enough. So in the jaw crusher business, Chinese people often use nodding at the first time. Greetings of cheek kissing, hand kissing, hat raising and tipping (two men lift or tip their hats to each other, rather than exchange words of greeting), hug are mainly found in English-speaking countries.
American sociologist E. Goffman says that people exchange greetings signals the beginning of a social contact while saying goodbye marks the ending of this contact. Parting is a difficult task in any culture，and it will be particularly difficult for people in another culture. The guest has to decide how long it is appropriate to stay, and having decided to leave，he needs to know what to say.
Parting serves two functions: mitigation and consolidation. Mitigation allows the interlocutors to arrive at a cooperative parting, where any feeling of ejection by the person being left may be alleviated by proper reassurance from the one leaving. Consolidation refers to the function of consolidating the relationship between the two interlocutors, by some behavior emphasizing the enjoyable aspect of the encounter, the assertion of mutual solidarity, and the announcement of a continuing encounter in the future. In western culture, the guests always keep a couple of minutes’ talk before leaving. For example, “Well, it’s been lovely to see you, but I must be going soon, I hope we’ll be able to get together again before long.” or “Thank you for a lovely evening. I must not hold you any longer.” The host will see the guest to the door and say something like “Thank you for coming.”
