Malta is famous for being one of the countries with the highest population density in the world. Here, you’ll discover an eclectic blend of different cultural and artistic heritages, with Roman and Norman influences alongside others from Britain and France.

The country became independent in 1974, and since then it has been transformed into one of the world’s most up-and-coming destinations for those intrigued by art and culture. Malta’s contemporary art offering is diverse, with a wide range of different galleries and museums welcoming in more visitors every year.

Studio 104

Having opened in Valletta back in 2013, Studio 104 is very much new to the Malta art scene. It functions as a working studio as well as a space for showcasing contemporary art, with exhibits ranging from installations to audio-visual pieces.

The exhibition created by owner and curator of the gallery, Michelle Morrissey, is well worth a look. A Sense of Place displays her expressionist works and will give you a real flavour of what Studio 104 is all about.

The National Museum of Fine Arts

The National Museum of Fine Arts opened in 1974 and is also located in Valletta. Here you’ll find it in a palace that dates back to 1760, with the museum offering visitors the chance to take a tour through the history of Maltese art, beginning with medieval pieces and working all the way through to the modern day.

St James Cavalier

Having now had over 1 million visitors, St James Cavalier was initially set up by the Maltese Government as their Millennium Project. It sought to boost the country’s flourishing contemporary art scene whilst also showcasing and celebrating Malta’s intriguing cultural and artistic history.

This thriving hub of creativity is located in a fort built in the 16th century and includes a theatre space, art-house cinema, gallery space and a chamber music room too!

How to Get There

The best way to reach your accommodation is to take one of the many Malta airport taxis that are available when you land. A friendly and professional driver will meet you at the airport and take you to your accommodation without any hassle, so you can get started on your holiday as soon as possible.

Malta airport taxis are the most convenient and cost-effective way to get to your destination. Pre-booking one of the said Malta airport taxis well in advance will guarantee the best price and will give you the peace of mind that comes with knowing that all your travel arrangements are sorted before you ever leave the ground.

There is no doubt that Malta has become a country buzzing with creativity and artistic talent. Which of the country’s up-and-coming galleries will you visit first? Will it be the owner’s exhibition at Studio 104, a trip through Malta’s artistic history at the National Museum of Fine Arts or something else that takes your fancy?
