The premier Alpine resort of Alpe d’Huez is not only known for the quality of its slopes and snow, but also for its accessibility for ski beginners and families. The classes and the number of gentle green runs ensure an avalanche of fun, even for those who have yet to master skiing.

The town offers a load of other physical activities for groups to get stuck into as well; there are enough facilities and places to eat to keep parents and children alike amused away from the pistes. The layout of the town also means that many Alpe d’Huez chalets are centrally located with good public transport links that can take groups wherever they need to go.

On the Snow

The winter is when some of the best sports come out from hiding. Skiing and snowboarding are great but there is so much more that snow and ice can offer… like flying around on a snowmobile.

Espace Motoneige has a snowmobile course with an array of jumps, bumps and corners to test your skills. There are ample opportunities to bring the machine outside of that controlled environment too. Experienced guides can take you and the family out into the mountains for an hour at a time – either as a driver or passenger. It’s also a great opportunity to explore the dramatic landscapes in a unique way.

What about ice skating? The large rink on Avenue des Jeux is open all day, every day throughout the season, with boots for hire and free entry for children under five. It’s a great way to chill for a morning or afternoon and, because it’s in the centre of town, it’s easy to reach.

Children love animals, and there are few more beautiful than the dogs that pull sleds around the valleys. Either take the reins yourself or be a passenger to an expert. Dog sledding is the perfect family activity.

Off the Snow

But what about those days when the cold bites a bit too hard or the little ones are too worn out for lengthy outdoor exploring? No problem – that can be easily sorted in Alpe d’Huez. Chalets around town have great access to many indoor facilities.

The Palais des Sports leisure centre plays host to a number of pastimes. There is a large indoor swimming pool for Mum, Dad and the older kids, with a splash pool for toddlers and weaker swimmers to play in. The climbing wall there is also popular. With a surface area of 180 square metres, it is big and has 21 routes of varying difficulty. Lessons are available for children too.

There is also a pair of cinemas in town – a great way to wind down after an active day.

Recommended Accommodation: Alpe d’Huez Chalets

There are plenty of rentals to pick from in Alpe d’Huez, chalets being one of the best options. They are usually located in the centre of town, which is the best spot to reach many of the activities listed above. Accommodation choices include catered or self-catered, and half-board or full-board.

Whether you and your family are in the mood for a day out snowmobiling or a dip in an indoor pool, Alpe d’Huez has more than enough active adventures perfectly suited to the whole brood.
